Technical Surfacing in Alias

The mesh data is from a  1:4 scale Clay Model and has been scaled to 1.1 in Alias

In an Automotive Design Studio this data typically contains inaccuracies and it is one of the jobs of a Technical Surfacer to Reverse Engineer new surfaces, which measure -up to Class A specifications

My student here has created x-secs from the mesh,

converted them to nurbs crvs and then started to rebuild the mesh data in order to produce very accurate surfaces.

Trim-Out the Front Quarter-light

From your sideglass and use it as the base for the triangular Mirror Base Plate

A Prod. mirror has an elaborate hinge mech. with channels to take wiring, but as we are making a basic mirror, we don’t need to worry about that

Just make a telescopic joint, which if you wish you can make oval in section

Project 4 crvs onto the triangle the one in the front corner should be very short (circa 2mm). This is a very common trick in NURBS modeling, we often make a seemingly triangular shaped surf, by using a square, which has 3 visible bound and one very short one.

All proper surfs in Alias must have four boundaries

Once you have built this “triangular surf” you can transform it with the Proportional Modification Cont. to make it look like an injection moulding

Blend your teliscopic section onto the “triangle” at one end and the mirror head at the other

Here’s a Production Mirror Head, Built to catia V5.

You will notice that I haven’t used either the free-form or Surface Fillet Tools, as these are not accurate enough for most of the complex filleting required for Catia V5.

Often I will build Freeform/Surface fillets and merely use them as slave surfs to develop more accurate surfs , which have perfect G2 or G3 crvtr. conditions

For most work the above tools are fine, but for tight prod. work being data transferred to other software down-line, I use Rail surfs.

“C” the Myth About Curvature Green Flags

For most of my Prod. work I use Catia V5. with fillet curvature G1 or Green Flag =”T”

This type of modeling is very precise, has good visual qualities and is accepted by down-line software

Curvature Flags I use as my guide to local boundary curvtr. cond. on large surfs that comprise 2 or more sub-surfs.

How and Where to use Construction Planes

If you want pro. surfs

You must build them from Pro. Curves

and that means that your crvs, must be planarized between ends

Mostly I use 3 point PLs

Plane “A”

I have created with the Dynamic Section crv. I took the Dyn.Sec. from the original Free Form Blend. Once I had the x-sec. I deleted the slave blend, converted my x-sec. crv from deg 3,33 to deg. 5,1

I then Aligned the deg. 5 crv, del. it’s hist. and adjusted it using the Comb to get a nice visual fillet sect.

Plane “C”

Is a 3 point CP.which I projected onto the Mirror Back surf to align my crv. to (the COS went right across the surf, but I hv, truncated it for neatness)

Plane “B”

Is a 3 point CP. which sets the whole mirror in True-View in F5
