It’s 3:34 am. and a Good Time for Learning Autodesk-Alias

I’ve returned to this front-end slab surface I built a couple of months back as a project for my students. After they did a few tutorials on the surface Fillet Tool and Washing Out fillets, I felt ready to start giving them the go ahead to start boldly cutting into their basic slab surfs. We’ve also built an inner wheel arch..

Industry at Times is Brutal

When your modelling in an industrial Alias environment you will often be asked by the stylist to hack into large areas of your model and incorporate radical design changes. It’s very annoying and upsetting when it happens, but you should never show that. Always see that your mission is to create a product that will sll in the market place and if Engineering or Styling want to make a big change to your model, it is because it’s in the best interest of the project and all the mouths that it feeds

I’ve built a lot of fillets and what I’ve learned, is

That one has to think through how the fillets are going to join at corners and some times it’s better to build them short of a corner and then model a trasitional surface to join the two fillet sets at the corner

Lighting an Automotive Front End

This is a student’s first go at lighting a front end:”This is dfinitely not easy. My effort is only just about acceptable and I need to improve my lighting skills a lot. In this sceene I have a directional light with a spot (vertically downwards) 2 spots on the front surfs. a spot on the front corner and then a final spot pointing at the radial wheel arch. My spots range in intensity from 75,000 – 300,000. I set my directional light to 1.0 and when I use Ambient my normal setting is 0.4 – 1.0″

It’s no good thinking about lighting without thinking about shaders at the same time.

I’ve improved the lighting a little on this students file and left some work for him to do: I’ve used a car paint shader and then layered a Clear Coat shader over it. For the inner wheel arch I needed a seperate shader with the reflectivity turned off and without the layering of the Clear Coat. There are loads of areas that could be improved both in the modelling and in the lighting, but here it is. Oohps! Looks like I’ve got a flat tyre. I have set the ground plane a little higher to give the effect of compression in the tyre, but I’ve over done it!Sheet metal features added to front end section

I have Shown a Screenshot of a Rough Model that I will Now Build an Accurate Model From.
