My Job at Audi AG as a clay modeller was to produce a model A6, usually 1:5 scale, which would be outstanding above the collection of 5 or so other models built in other studios all over the world. A highly talented designer who has great powers of visualization, can only ever be as good as his/her modeller.

How Did We Win Design Shows

To win a Styling design show you must not only have a good aesthetic design concept, but you must model it to the highest surface standards imaginable. A car exterior is perceived much as a piece of jewelery is. It must shine and sparkle and the highlights must run evenly across its surfaces.

Highlights Show Off surface Perfection

An error of a few hundredths of 1mm can be detected by the human eye as an imperfection and therefore a loss of quality

Audi Spend more on Highlighting Their Models

Audis are expensive cars and there is more money available in the Styling budget than at Ford say. My model of the A6 conceived in 1999 and produced 6 years later had extremely accurate surfaces and therefore accurate highlights and that’s why it survived all the many design shows, where all the top brass came and would successively axe projects until only our model was left (Satoshi Wada and me).

Autodesk Alias Move CV Tool

I have spent many hours using the above tool to pull my CV’s in either XYZ world space or NUV (Normal to surface vectors).

It’s 5:30 am and I’m too tired to write about all the tools  and diagnostics I use to help me understand surfaces enough to be able to tweak Cv’s until I have the highlights flowing where  I want then, but I’ll do a special post on it soon with all the necessary screenshots.

In go Some Parting Lines

Parting lines on a mobile phone are a challenge, but on a car they are tremendously difficult. If you are an expert please write a comment with your Hot Tips for all us Alias Modelling Freaks

Front Reflectors Are in

Automotive reflectors are complicated structures and require many hours. Here I have made some simple ones with three cells in each reflector. I made them by throwing a draft surface back from the side light apperture. I then intersected the draft surfaces with a plane. Next I built three piggy back surfaces on the plane surf. and used the Proportional Modification tool to pull out CV’s to form the depressions in the reflector.[slickr-To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry entry level has been made easier.
