NURBS Class A Surfs from Mesh Data

Here’s a short video. I will try to find time to put up a longer one when I have some time.

Technical Surfacing in Alias

The mesh data is from a  1:4 scale Clay Model and has been scaled to 1.1 in Alias

In an Automotive Design Studio this data typically contains inaccuracies and it is one of the jobs of a Technical Surfacer to Reverse Engineer new surfaces, which measure -up to Class A specifications

My student here has created x-secs from the mesh,

converted them to nurbs crvs and then started to rebuild the mesh data in order to produce very accurate surfaces.

Here the yellow is the mesh, whilst the brown is the new surface set emerging . The areas where we can see the yellow poking thru the brow are very accurately modeled, whilst the areas that are all brown are not within acceptable deviation tols.

Here we can see how he has laid new surfaces over the given mesh

and is attempting to get a high quality Zebra Plot. It is not just about copying the mesh, as you can be sure that the mesh will have surfaces errors within it, so he must report where he has had to deviate from the mesh in order to improve the surface flow

Evaluating Your Technical Surfacing

It’s easy to seer the good stuff and the WIP, when you ramp up the shading to get a good look at your surface flow and crvtr. cont.

His rear eyebrow, lower side-wall, green house and front fender are all spot-on,

but he needs a bit of help where he has not achieved G3 in places. Where front fender joins the side wall, this is obvious.

Students can follow an Introductory course in Technical Surfacing on my Brand New Alias Learning Website

Although to learn quickly, I recommend that you apply for a place with me as a one to one student. This is the best way to learn quickly (If  you decide to apply to me, please include your CV, PF; specimen 3D work ).

It is very difficult to study Technical Surfacing and most Surfacers learn the skills whilst working in Automotive Design studios. IMHO. it takes a min. of 5 years to become a reasonable Tech. Surfacer and up to 10 yrs. to become a good Tech. Surfacer, but once you have made it there’s always work to be had and the rate is very good.

Pictured below is an Audi A5 Sportback built by one of my students who is now a Digital Sculptor for GM.

I am now putting some of my tutorials on YouTube, so whilst you’re there you may wish to check them out. There’s a full tutorial on how to create a Ball Corner to Class A Surfacing, Catia V5 spec.

To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry Entry level has been made easier.

For student’s who have the objective of finding a CAD job in the near future, I still teach One to One students and all of these students get Automotive Modeling or Design/Modeling jobs, so it’s a great investment to make. The hourly rate is very high and there are vacancies in UK. France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, USA, Brazil etc. I can only take a maximum of 5-7 students at any one time. I teach all levels right up to Post Graduates. I have never had a Private student fail to get an Alias Automotive job (Companies include Ferrari, GM, Lotus, Opel, Audi Seat etc. ). If you wish to apply for a place, please email me with all your details.
