I get hundreds of emails from Alias Automotive students, asking me how they can reach Automotive Industry Entry Level, so I have decided to talk about this subject here on my website
Specialized University Courses
I should like to start by saying that if you have the resources available you should do a 3-4 year course in Transport Design at a top university. A course like this whilst it does not guarantee you getting a job, will help build your skills in Visualization, Sketching, Clay Modeling and Digital Modeling. In my experience although the percentage of students finding a Digital Modeling job directly as a result of graduating is still fairly small. these students if they are prepared to invest a small amount of money in private Alias training almost without fail manage to make Industry entry level, within 3-12 months and find an Alias job.
The Rift between what a student learns at university and what Industry requires:
Transport Design University Degree: This without doubt goes a long way to preparing a student for Industry by giving him/her a wide range of experience related to the design and development of various mediums of transportation. The very talented designers in any one graduation class will find either internships of low salaried jobs with car manufacturers, but the majority of graduates are left without positions
Why is this?
Quite simply because universities do not have the resources to teach Alias or other top drawer NURBS modeling packages. If you were an Alias expert would you chose to teach or would you chose to work in a fantastically interesting environment, with incredibly creative cool people and a nice fat salary ie.an Automotive Design Studio. Of course it’s a no brainier. I made the clay model for the very first Ford Fiesta in 1972 at Dunton in Essex.UK.

UK. I am now nearing retirement and teach Alias to hand picked students, as hobby. If I were younger, I simply wouldn’t be available to teach. Many colleges and unis. don’t offer a professional surfacing software at all and instead teach 3D Max. Many of the people who teach Alias in unis. Have no real experience of Automotive Alias. It’s only the very best Universities and private colleges who can afford to bring in teachers from Industry.
What’s the answer then?
Find some cash by hook or by crook and buy some tuition from a pro. modeler. There are various on-line Alias courses available of which mine is only one. With private lessons students quickly bridge that gap between university knowledge and Industry entry level.
How many months training will I need?
This varies a lot depending on how much the student already knows (current skill level) , how bright they are and finally how much time they are prepared to devote to Alias Modeling. The quickest a student has ever found an Alias job, from the day they started with me is 3 months (I have had several students who have managed this, most of whom have had 3D product design modeling jobs and have converted to Alias Automotive). For most students the time is around 9 months, whilst others want to take their time and develop a wide port folio and take a year or so.
Is it absolutely necessary to have a degree?
No if you have some relevant experience and a first class digital portfolio, it is still possible to get a job on contract, as a beginner.
I want to learn concert violin at home alone. I don’t need a teacher:
Yes! It’s a ridiculous statement, isn’t it? But there are many Alias students who try to teach themselves Automotive Entry Level Alias.
It’s like saying your going to learn Black Belt Taekwondo from a book. Just like you need the master to transmit years of personal knowledge, you need to learn Alias from a teacher who has many years of experience to offer you.
How many hours per day do I need to practice?
The absolute minimum is 2 hours, but I have students who put in a 12-14 hour day. The latter usually find a job in a very short time. Automotive Alias is a BIG subject to learn. It includes: Reverse Engineering, NURBS Curves and Patch method and Overbuild Method. To get a job you need to know all these, plus be able to model with mainly single span Bezier surfaces to Catia V4 tols.

Access to all videos including my ” Private Student Training Videos”. You will build at least 3 complete automotive exteriors. The course also includes an intensive Reverse Engineering section, which required by most employers.
“Course #3”.
Fast Track Full Pro. “One to One” Course with weekly reviews and coaching 250 GBP per month. One to One Private tuition. You will receive specific geometry and meshes and modeling from me personally where required, to help you to complete your exteriors quickly to an Industry entry level standard. This means a bigger investment, but once in an Alias modeling job you will get back what you invested many times over and be able to work anywhere in the world
