Alias Studio Tutorial

Starting to Look Like an Automotive Exterior in Alias Autodesk

Now that I have created the Body Side I had to overcome the challenge of blending the Radial Wheel Arches “Eyebrows” into the body. On this car I started with the simpler front eyebrow. I didn’t allow it to flow into the shoulder to avoid creating complex modelling challenges. They can’t be avoided period, but as some of my students are not ready to take on anything more complex yet I am at this point avoiding asking them to create filleted intersection surfaces surface blends, where G3 condition is required.
Method for Making A BIG Radial Wheel Arch. Note the Numerous Radial Patches and the Curves Built with Construction Planes and the Align Tool

Front Eyebrow Built to join a Curve on Surface on the Body Side

I built the Front wheel arch to meet C_O_S that I had projected onto the body side.I started the construction by projecting curves for the 25mm wide wheel arch flange onto the body side. Next I created this flange surface on the body side surf. and then moved it out to where the outer edge of the wheel will be. Then I had to pull cv’s on the top part of the flange to make it vertical so that it would be in line with the wheel. You don’t want too many CV’s on your flange otherwise you won’t be able to pull out the shape. The more commonly used method is to build a sqaure that where you want the wheel arch flange and then project inner and outer curves onto it.

Creating the Fillet between Wheel Arch and Body Side

Here I used the Tubular Surface tool. This creates curves on both surfs. I trimmed out where the Tubular Surf. tool had intersected the Wheel arch and Body Side surfs. This creates a gap perfect for using the Free Form Fillet tool.

The Rear Eyebrow is Another Story

I went mad here and threw myself in the deep end by taking the wheel arch up onto the shoulder, this creates a very trick surface flow challenge. My solution was to make the wheel arch in one main piece, as a Square surf, deep enough so that it intersected the body side and the shoulder completely.

Next

I Intersected the surfs. and trimmed them all back, then I used the Tubular Surface tool and trimmed a gap between the surfaces where the fillet would be created. I built the free form fillet in 3 pieces and did a lot of CV pulling to get even a basically acceptable surface at the top of the wheel arch.

My More Advanced Students

Will get this task to tackle soon. I will give them a set of work flow instructions and when they get stuck, I’ll get their .wires coming in and they’ll then finish the task once they’ve got the feed back they need from me. Students find this system works well. It’s much cheaper than paying a teacher by the hour and as well as advancing quickly and never being in that horrible “I’m Stuck” place for long; there’s no time wasted in traveling.

To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry Entry level has been made easier.

For student’s who have the objective of finding a CAD job in the near future, I still teach One to One students and all of these students get Automotive Modeling or Design/Modeling jobs, so it’s a great investment to make. The hourly rate is very high and there are vacancies in UK. France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, USA, Brazil etc. I can only take a maximum of 5-7 students at any one time. I teach all levels right up to Post Graduates. I have never had a Private student fail to get an Alias Automotive job (Companies include Ferrari, GM, Lotus, Opel, Audi Seat etc. ). If you wish to apply for a place, please email me with all your details.
