The Shoulder Surface Autodesk Alias
The shoulder is the surface that I most fear when attempting to build an automotive styling model in Alias.
It relies on 2 complex curves being exactly correct
If the inner and outer shoulder curves do not look beautiful in every view and have a perfect relationship to each other, the highlights will be horrible and the model wrecked.
Highlights a)
aWhat makes a car look beautifull is its basic form and the way in which its surfaces catch and reflect light. These reflections are called Highlights. If you look at the way the surface of a bBentley reflects light and then compare the accurace of the reflection with a cheap car, you will see that reflection of light establishes the degree of quality contained in the form.
Working With Top Stylists
I have been lucky enough to work with brilliant stylists like. Satoshi Wada at Audi and Gilles Vidal at Citroen and I know how much time they devote to getting the shoulder curves to flow smoothly in all views. They do this with a very trained eye and by using full size drawings onto which they lay 5mm black tapes and also by laying tape lines onto the clay model until they get them absolutely right. These taped lines are accurate to 1mm on a full size clay model.
The Highlights b)
The highlights are very, very important, as they define the underlying form. They also look nice to the general public and when they are good, they convey the quality of the design to the viewer.
Highlights Deepend on 2 Things
- The quality of the shoulder curves any kinks or any kind of surf. cont. breakdown and GOODBYE to your highlights
- The consistency of the crowning between the 2 curves
