Patch Layout Audi A5 Sportback

This is the teaching model I use with my students. I use the A5 because it is a very demanding to construct.

The surfaces are very subtle and unless you plan your patch layout very carefully the model will fail

I have built the entire center of the car with apexless surfs. When building these I select symmetrically oposite CV’s and digitally align them in the Info. Window.

The Hood and Grille are made from two deg 5,5,1,1. surfs

Screen and roof are resolved with a Surf. Fillet G2 and then by pulling Cv hulls within the blend (3rd row) G3 is attained

The A5 Cant Rail has 2 surfaces (surf.#1  &  2)

Patch boundaries on the Body Side are designed to Align with Patch boundaries on the Shoulder (see Patch Align)

REF: Patch Layout for Body Side is modelled with curves and then Imported and made Inactive

The Side glass is modelled flush with the sheet metal and a lot of time is spent aligning it with the aperture in both TOP & SIDE

We call it the Side Glass, but actually this is a Misnomer. At this stage it just representing the sheet metal Level. It does not have exactly the same shape as the real Side Glass

Side Glass is Ultimately Moved Inwards by 22 mm

Later on in the model when the “C” Pillar has been modelled the side glass will be moved inwards to it’s correct position.

At this point it will have to be hand modelled, as the sheet metal had to curve in to wash out into the “C” Pillar. Now it can be trued up again

to restore the highlights
