Overbuild Modeling Method

Alias Tutorial:

Large Overbuilt Rail Surfaces are intersected to create the Theoretical Intersection Line.

I use this method for conceptual models where the design is constantly changing. It is relatively quick to change say the plan line of the sidewall or the amount of crown in a surface, either by direct modeling the curves or where a planar surface has been used by direct modeling it’s hull.  Using the Rail surfacing tool, a lot of the surfaces can be constructed using 2 curves, instead of the 4 required with NURBS curves and Patches

Alias Tutorial:

The Primary rail surfaces can be direct modeled at this stage to either simply follow the ref. data or to establish high quality styling lines for the main features of the exterior; waist line , shoulder line etc.

Note how the graphics have already been projected onto the sidewall & how the rear panel has been symmetrically modeled

I am able to adjust the core highlights for the primary surfaces quite easily without having to adjust a complex curve set. With this method of modeling we must be ready to start pulling CV’s right from the beginning of the modeling process

Overbuild technique can be used at all levels of Alias Surfacing for example it is used a lot in Class A, Technical Surfacing and in Mesh to NURBS, Reverse Enginneering.
