Part 2

I hope that readers don’t conclude that I am being cynical about CAD Higher Ed. courses. It’s just that it seems to me to be quite clear, that having a degree, which includes Alias CAD modeling, simply is very rarely enough to get you a job and certainly not an Automotive Alias or ICEM surf job.

I want to tell you about 2 of my students who recently won highly paid Alias Automotive contracts. I wont give their personal details, but I will tell you what they went through and the course they took in order to get into the world of Automotive Digital Modeling (I’ll simply call them Terry and Brian)

Terry is a very talented Designer/Modeler and was when I met him 28 years old and a 3D Max expert. He was designing and modeling designer shoes.

He had started learning Alias on his own and had half completed a simple Automotive exterior. He became frustrated with not knowing the best work flows to use and had little idea about such fundamental issues as; Patch Layout and how to chose the correct surface or curve degree for any given situation.

He contacted me at my website, sent examples of his designs and Alias model. I could see that he was a talented guy with a feel for Alias modeling, so I took him on as a private student. He worked very hard on the Audi A5 model, which is a very challenging model. It wasn’t easy for him. Each time he sent me his work, I would return it with corrections, tips advice and a written report, but he never got downhearted. He didn’t progress rapidly with the model, but he approached it with a high degree of perfection. He was soon producing beautiful surfaces and I was struggling to find anything visually wrong with them, but of course I could always find the extra span shoved in here and there.

At the 3 month point he got offered an interview with a top UK car manufacturer, they loved him and his work and took him on with a great salary. He is still studying with me , learning Reverse Engineering and in anybodies book has made it!

Brian did a full Transport Design course at the end of which he served an internship in Spain, but there was no job at the end of it. When I met him he was very down about the fact that hee’d been out of Automotive for 18 months and couldn’t find a company interested in him at any price. He made a big and fantastic career choice. He decided to drop Design and do everything within his power to become a good Alias CAD Modeler.

He told me how pathetic his university course had been , as far as providing Alias Training had been concerned. When I first saw his skills they were pretty thin on the ground, but he had fantastic conviction. He had decided to study Alias Automotive to Entry Level and get a job. He had started his own Internet retailing business, which took 4 hours of his time per day, leaving him with plenty of time to study Alias working into the early hours every night.

He has built every model on my site plus the Audi A5 Sportback and my concept car, the Virrage Sportster. He then decided to study Reverse Engineering with me and now is fast and accurate. He has surfaced several complete Meshes to within +/- 1.00 mm.

Over the last few months he has had several job offers regarding which he has sought my advice. I have always advised him not to accept them. Initially because there were still areas of Alias Automotive , which he had not yet studied and then recently because the salary was insufficient. Finally he flew out to Italy where he had 2 interviews, being offered both jobs. He took accepted one of them,

the pay and condition are very good, an apt. is included, as are 2 flights to his home country per month. He is a very happy guy and has booked tuition with me until the end of 2011.

I hope that these true stories give readers more of a picture, as to what is involved in reaching Entry Level to the Automotive Alias world.

NB: To all readers: If you would like to contribute a piece from your personal experience towards this open ended article, please send me your text and I will incorporate it.

Kind Regards
