Here’s how my students first Try at Building a Helmet with 5 Surfaces Came Out

No Tweaking CV’s, Rebuilding Surfaces, Just the Raw First Model

This is a tutorial from the Autodesk Alias Learning website Posted August 13, 2009, 1:20 am by Fridolin Beisert

http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/This model is based on a primitive (sphere) which has been transformed and trimmed berfore having transisional surfs built on to its curves on surface.

There is a fair bit of  “Proportional Modification Control” used for

  • creating the peak from a square built onto the surface of the sphere. The sphere’s surfaces were dodgy after transforming and he should have perfected them before continuing.
  • pulling down the rim to form the neck guard
  • pulling out the rolled edge on the visor

“Whilst I did learn a lot, I also struggled with certain aspects of this model”

  • Getting a really true surf. once he had transformed the orig. sphere
  • Getting the peak to look as though it is a continuous surface with the sphere (even though the Curvature Locators showed “C” on the long edge of the peak’s surf. boundary, in the rendering the surface join is obvious)
  • Lighting. It took him 2 hrs. to get the scene even reasonably lit for rendering

Well although he is pleased with the first attempt, I can see lots of areas where he needs to improve his modelling and we will be working to improve those, so that he ends up with a product model that he can feel proud of, before moving onto a more challenging tutorial
