Aligning Air-Intake Surf & Body Panel

This is a really tricky part of the A5 to model Alias and the only way to really see what your surfs are doing is to take x-secs, using the Alias Dynamic Section Control. Looking at the horiz. sec. the surfaces appear to be flowing in harmony———————–

Analysing Surface Issues in Alias

When we look at a section cut vertically we can see that we are nowhere near gaining crvtr. cont. between the red ad blue surfs.

I have built my test surfs with deg. 2 crvs, so it is easy to adjust the surfaces, as I get closer to what I want, I will step the crvs up to deg. 5,1. in CP and build my final surfs with deg:5,5,1,1.

Audi A5 Hood & Fender Top Surfs

The hood is a class A surface, but if we study the 2 fender top surfs we can see that the larger one is not very good internally

Analyzing Surface Internals with Dynamic Section Cont.

Because surf#2 is having to do so much work, its smoothness is bound to break down, resulting in very poor internal surface quality

I have put in 4 x-secs using Dynamic Sect. Cont.The hood is perfect, as it’s a Class A Surface. Surf#1, is reasonable, but has broken down at point C .

Because Alias has to guess how the surface internals should be & base this solely on the shape of the boundary crvs, the surface internals have collapsed at point A & B

Note that the x-secs at the front and back of the surf are showing that near to the boundary crvs the surf internals are well formed

CV Hulls Tell the Story

just a quick look at the CV Hulls is all that is needed to see that this not anywhere near being a Class A Surf, in fact it is not even a concept surface. This is a typical 1st year students attempt at building a complicated Nurbs surface. It is what I call a failed srf.

the surf deg. is 5,5,1,1. and along its long boundaries it simply hasn’t enough CVs. to maintain its internal smoothness

the hood is 5,5,1,1. so we don’t want to change the degree on the other surfaces in the surf-set, as Class A requires that CV Hulls line-up where possible

Here in stark comparison is A Class A version of the same A5 shoulder area created by a pro. modeler. We can easily see the great skill level employed to align all the CV hulls so beautifully

Understanding the Language of Diagnostics

it’s easy to see by looking at the sharp peaks within the small surf and the 2 rounded shapes in the middle of the large fender surf, that these surfaces have failed internally

Getting Smooth Surface Internals

I have used remodelled x-secs taken from the 1st surf_set to build this set of 8 surfs (all deg: 5,5,1,1.)

We can see that all the surf boundaries are smooth, both on the large and small surf. This surface set has good internal structure and the highlights will be good

The x-sec at the front shows that this area is also good and note how smoothly all the tansverse fender crvs flow into the short crvs of the hood detail

These surfaces which I couldn’t have made unless I constructed  the simpler surf_set first, are now Class A.

What Do The Zebras Say?

By looking at the surfs in F5 we see that there is a beautiful flow of the Zebra Stripes indicating good quality surface internals

Also there is no sharp break, as the Zebras flow from the fender top into the hood detail surf. There’s just a smooth unbroken flow and we cant tell where the large surf ends and the small one starts. This is Class A.

This is a student’s model of the Audi A5 Sportback

He has still got work to do to finish this, the 2nd of 3 models of this car required to be built, on this course. The 3rd. model will be of a higher standard and will comprise mainly class A Surfaces

Rendering in Alias

Showcase is used a lot these days for model presentation rendering. It offers a range of environments to which u can add your own and these can be reflected in the model’s surfs.

However if you wish to create a different feel to your rendering , then Alias offers a sophisticated Rendering Software package.

Background: has been treated with Gaussian Blur in Photoshop and then mapped to the Environment Shader in the Alias rendering Multi_Lister

Floor: is a plannar sur with a simple Phong shader set to 80% reflectivity

Body: has a  very slightly off-white car paint shader and has the environment jpg mapped to it, as well as being mapped also to a jpg. of sky & clouds

Glass. has a glass shader mapped to it and then in addition another jpg. of the environment combined with sky/cloud is also mapped

Headlamp: Glass with sky/cloud jpg. mapped to it

Lens Flare: applied in Photoshop

It’s very fashionable at the moment to render NURBS geom. (sometimes exporting in a different formant, such as STEP) for presentation using Autodesk Showcase whilst many Alias modellers still prefer to render in Alias

Is one application better than the other?

Please email me with your opinion and comments. I would also very much welcome any examples of your own work that has been rendered together with the settings you used. The best examples I will publish here

I personally make my own shaders for Alias , but there are times when I wish I could use the standard shaders from Showcase eg: Chrome, Tyre Tread.

If any one out there has a good example of any of these shaders for use in Alias, please send it/them to me by email

I have exagerated the amount of reflectivity for the image mapping

On the above img. we can see that the mapped reflexion is the same for each spoke,

so not really photo-realistic

A good Alias renderer can set-up a scene like this

very quickly and it is quite distinct from what is achievable with Showcase, it’s perhaps a lot quicker in Alias, to set-up an environment and to addd props, although personally I find generating shaddows the way I require them difficult

The Audi A5 Sportback

is our current tutorial project. The pic is of a WIP. The student has been learning how to model the Grille Surround and the air intake, which has an integrated spot light

The side glass moulding was not a success for him, so he is going to remake it . Moulding are really tricky to make when you’re learning Alias, but once you learn how to use construction planes to give you the true view of your section curves, life starts to get a lot easier.

The Secret of mastering Alias, is to have a teacher, so that you don’t waste time being STUCK and to practise and practise. If you only ever build something once, you learn very little.

This model still has a long way to go, but the student is well on his way to having a beautiful model to show at interview. He was recently offered an Alias contract, but wisely IMHO. has decided to complete the Audi project first, by which time he will be much better prepared to take on the challenge of working as an Alias Automotive Modeller.
