Following him having to stop development on his Porche Carrera Turbo by adjusting all the settings on his monitor and concentrating on detailing i.e. a wheel, he has made some good progress today.This is his first real attempt at a road-wheel. it is straight from my head (No pictures and no dimensions) I wrote a tutorial which I have sent to several of my students who are at the correct level. It has taken me 1 long hard day, but I am very pleased with my effort and now I am waiting for the emails to come in as and when students get stuck.—————————————

A wheel has loads of geometry and therefor has a large file size. This single wheel has pushed students PC’s to their limits very limits. If I displayed all 4 at one time I would not be able to do any modelling at all.This is the first proper rendering some of my students have ever done. My student’s latest model is growing after making major changes to arrive at special body kit design.
These are just the basic surfaces, which I will cut into to create all the tasty front end detail. Taking the dogs out now. Its very sunny with a wonderful blue sky.Once I’ve done that I’ll email my wire to my student who can then bring his model up to my level, emailing me for help as and when he needs it.Most of the surfaces on this model are Beginner’s Level, but at least now I know where I have to improve. There aren’t any tutorials available for Automotive Design,I teach Alias Surfacing Techniques by stting work in all areas of product design . I am now working on a Nike style sports watch, which involves Natural Surfacing I use this tutorial a lot. It’s a really tough one, but once done you learn so much from it. I teach a lot about how to build more accurate surfaces and how to get better flow across surface boundaries where needed. It’s not going to come to students over night. They will only improve by following lots of tutorials and practicing with the Alias surfacing tools.

One of my young private students (18 years old) built a car that roughly resembled a Porsche. It was a pretty poor quality model, but the body sides were really good surfaces. I wanted to encourage him to continue the model, as telling him to scrap it would have just crushed his spirits, so I decided to set him the task of stage by stage developing it by adding detail. Today I have been putting some real Porsche Carrera Special Body Kit details in around the sill and air intake. It’s been a roller coaster of a day. I did all the work once and then because I have been using (YES!!!!) Autodesk v.2010 and I didn’t understand that it wasn’t remembering my preferences (my 60-70 hot-keys) I stupidly closed the application and clicked don’t save (as I had already depressed Ctrl+S), so that’s how I lost half a day’s work. I had been saving with the hot-keys for hours, but I failed to check that the new set-up was working first. Even with several years experience when you let your concentration lapse, it can cost you dearly.Normally I save my models as a new file at least once per day and by the end of the project I might have 30+ versions of the Exterior. I often import components from older files if I have messed something up. But the BEST PRACTICE is to save regularly. You avoid so many heart breaks.________________________________________________________________

You need to register on the Autodesk Alias Design website, where you’ll be able to dowload tutorials and shaders etc.This website has a high standard forum and when you reach a good intermediate level, you will be able to ask serious queastions about Alias and get answers from the top experts.
It takes 5 years to learn the program to a basic Automotive Industry Entry Level
and you must progress from one model to the next sensibly and not set yourself up for failure by leaping onto projects that are just too difficult for your level. Last week one of my private students bit off more than she could chew trying to make a wing mirror. Her comment to me was. ” I was unable to finish it to a professional standard as I had no help and didn’t even know if it had been direct modelled in the first place”.She had no Internet that week and was unable to get support from me.
(Very often highly complex forms have to be made in clay first
and then Lazar scanned into Alias as cloud data for enhancement (Class A surfacing with G3 curvature cont.). It is really hard working in isolation). Here’s another very common comment from students.

I decided to take on the epic task of learning to model in Alias.
In 1999 whilst clay modelling the 2005 Audi A6 replacement under Senior Designer Satoshi Wada, I became firstly interested and then completely hooked on learning Alias Studio. I got a lot of help from my Senior Designer and during lunch and whilst working late, I used my time to gleen as much information about Alias as I could from Alias professionals.In the Automotive industry 3D modelling standards are very high. Alias Studio modellers work to exacting tollerences and have to avhieve very high quality surfacing as well as, a very high standard of Curvature continuity.I should mention here that, I have completed all the models in the Alias Wavefront education book “Learning Studio Tools” and IMHO that’s the best way to get started, but it really is just the very begining and to grow towards becoming a competent Product Modeller I knew that I would have to gain experience in many areas of modelling.I started learning to build virual vehicles models in 2001. When I built cars, the forms and dimensions came straight from my head without using any reference or drawings.
At the moment aesthetic design is not what I am attempting to achieve. It’s all about controlling surfaces and making each surface meet the next with Complete Curvature Cont. / Tangency or sometimes a Surface Break.) At first you will struggle to build good surfaces, but with each car you build and with each product mdelling tutorial that you complete, you will see an improvement.I will put some of my early work up here, so that you can see the problems that occur when you start out, as the weeks and months pass I shall be posting more sophisticated results.If you are really serious about learning Alias, you’ll find that there aren’t enough hours in a day!__________________________________________________________________
