Alias Studio Tutorial

0_car_1

This post is dedicated to my dear friend Angela and her newly born grandson Oscar

patch-layout-1

Hi, Today I have screenshots of my model of a front wing/fender

where the tangent break running down the body side has to washout without trace when it intersects the radial wheel arch “eyebrow”.The tutorial which is absolutely First Class is commissioned by Autodesk Alias Studio and is the work of

Roberto Tomarchio

Senior Support Product Specialist

Ideally this tutorial requires Autodesk 2011/2012 software. The tutorial consists of a 30 min. video which you can access if you sign up to the Autodesk Alias Learning sitehttp://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorialsHave you eaver had that feeling that you are actually getting somewhere after a long period of slaving away?In the above image we can see that a lot of patches have to be created to arrive at the high finish surface that this tutorial is aimed at.If we look carefully at the fillet running along the body-side we can see that 5 surfaces have to be created for the fillet alone to achieve the washout effect.

The principal learning objectives here are

  • The use of transitional surfaces
  • The use of the Detach tool to obtain Crv. Cont. by shortening surface spans
  • The use of the NEW Align tool for Edge Align and Vector Align
  • Projecting Normal the surface boundary of a transitional surface and then aligning the transitional surf. to the newly formed C-O-S. The screenshot doesn’t do justice to the quality of the wing, but I think it’s looking quite good
  • But many thanks to Roberto Tomarchi
  • This model is still in progress “WIP”, but I will piblish the finished image shortly
  • Pictured below is an Audi A5 Sportback built by one of my students who is now a Digital Sculptor for GM.

How Good Are My Surfaces?

There comes a time when on the learning alias path you realize that a model isn’t finished until it has NO GAPS between surface boundaries and it meets the construction Prefs. assigned to the project. If the surfacing tool is telling us that a boundary has say failed to achieve Position, then quite simply its no good and must be improved or deleted. Today I am not going into details of how and why. I just want to show how a model should be progressing in its early stages. (I will explain in more detail soon.)When building a car, I start in the center YO and build out from there. Here I have built the center section across the YO axis rather than build half a surface and then rely on layer symmetry to mirror the other half. It is very difficult to get a high qual.surf. with no break on the Yo line with this method, therefore I build my surfaces across the Y axis. This type of surface is called “Apex Free” I do this for at least 4 of the main surfaces “Primary Surfs.” i.e. Hood Top, Screen, Roof RR ScreenIn the first pic. I am happy with the surfs. as show-up by the Zebra Strip Diagnostic Shading (This is a very unforgiving level of rendering). The hood top is showing nice clean even stripes and the front end surface all have a nice even flow of stripes. However the red arrow is pointing to an unacceptable surface section. It looks to have too much crown and also to be irregular. I must put this right before continuing, as my wings/fenders “Secondary Surfs.” will take the boundaries of this surface as their datums. Most probably, I will delete the surf, modify the outer curve, checking it with the Locator-Curvature tool and then I will construct a new surface and keep working on it until it is right. it’s real important that we balance the Crvs which are adjacent on Sq. surfs. (Same amount of CV’s, edit points, Same degree and exactly the same curvature.)[slickr-flickr tag=”front end 1″]Here I can see a nice Ellipse on the screen and on the hood top, so I am pleased with these surfs. The Green arrow is pointing to a Tangent Break. In this case I wanted the surfaces to have an angular break at their common boundaries and these surfaces are both correct. A polished diamond has tangent breaks at its surf. boundaries, so that each surfaces reflects a different light value. This is where sculpture, precious stones and car design all meet.In this pic. I have used the Locator-Curve.Curvature tool set to Position to show/ test if adjacent surf. boundaries meet either  “GO” or Position. If a model does not have “GO” or better at all its surf. boundaries, then the data from the model would be rejected by any other CAD application that we attempted to transfer it to down line. My model is a Styling model, which would need to be transferred to other depts. on its way to becoming a production product (Class “A” surfacing, Aero-Dynamics, Cost and Feasibility, Engineering and Milling Machines etc.etc.) Here I can see that the green “P’s” are showing me that my model is good. I arrived at these surfaces after investing time, constructing high qual curves on which too build the surfs. I deleted the curves and the surfs. many times before arriving at a set that reached this level. Here I am showing a Powertracer Direct Rendering to give some idea as to how the model would look in real life. Note how important the tangent breaks become.________________________________________________________________

Moving from Beginners Tutorials

and moving into the big league. When you move from Alias std. start-up tutorials, to taking on top flight production tolerance tutorials,  it is really difficult, if not impossible to build a “Perfect” model without having several attempts at it. It’s very easy to get despondent or depressed when your model doesn’t have the perfect seamless surface blends and the high qual. trimmed edges etc.Details look nice rendered, but the surface fillets are too smallWhat I did in the past was to set myself reasonable goals. I would make a model to a reasonable quality at mt first attempt. Forget about trying to hit Catia V4 or 5 tolerances. Not trying to achieve what was at that time well beyond my skills and then when I started the second or third attempt, Iwould feel very positive, because I would realise that I have actually learned a lot. What seemed really complicated and difficult to follow and do the first time around, started to become a little easier and more understandable on the second or if called for the third attempt.I have had my lower-intermediate students working really hard, way out of their comfort zones, trying to build a sports watch. I am basing this watch on an excellent tutorial written by Jopshua Maruska.I have told them that on the first build I am not expecting to see tight tolerances and have allowed them as I used to to set their cons. prefs. to user tolerances. This allows them to build a model which is correct at their level, without having to know the advanced techniques required to achieve say Catia V4.Joshua Maruska has several tutorials at:http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/[slickr-flickr tag=”sports watch 2″]To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry Entry level has been made easier. Patched Surfaces Must Meet and Flow Correctly

I have now taken the retractable knife model a stage further and built the surfaces, as you can see I have turned on the edge locators to see if I have Position, Tangecy and Curvature Continuity where it is required.(I have Locator Persistence turned on, on the >Evaluate>Surface Continuity tool.)At this stage of the build, if there is a failure at one or more of the surface boundaries to get “P”, “T” of “C” the adjacent surfaces must be tweaked until the problem is put right. If the problem is beyond tweaking, then I have to delete the offending surfs. and re-construct them taking care that adjacent boundaries have matching degree levels (A degree three surf. boundary adjoins another of the same deg. 3 construction) and ensuring that surfaces have the same number of spans and consequently, surface isoparms. Usually I go back and re-check that curves meet with G0 or G2 etc as required.I find that only by taking great care to match the characteristics of adjoining surfs. can I move towards having a good model , which does not end up in the recycle bin. This model has a number of surface continuity problems and when I have finished the model  I will build another, learning from my mistakes.[slickr-flickr tag=”craft knife 3″]________________________________________________________________

Pulling CV’s Freehand Modelling

I have been working hard a little out of my comfort zone, building a sports watch. I am basing my watch on an excellent tutorial written by Joshua Maruska.Joshua Maruska has several tutorials at:http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/With this tutorial my students are learning about some tools which are completely new to them, plus I also have learned learned more about the tools I already know.I am happy with my first attempt, but you can see that the surfaces don't flow smoothlyThis tutorial is TOP Industrial Product Design level and it’s very hard, as you have to do a lot of freehand modelling. I have simplified the model for my student’s first attempts, but I have already told them that after they have finished this model, which is a work in progress, I will eventually get them to go back and do the full on Model.I'm happy with the way the detailing is going, but I need to work hard to improve my parting linesThere’s no point in pushing your self to build models that are to advanced for you. IMHO. it’s a lot better to take on projects that stretch you a little, but aren’t so difficult that they send you into a deep depression. When you get depressed making an Alias model and it happens to us all. Take a break and do something in the real world. Come back to your project when you feel repaired. When I worked in Automotive design doing really intensive work against a tight deadline, I had to stop for 10 min. every 2 hours and take a coffee. This is a good way of avoiding migraines and you actually get more work done in the long run, but don’t mention this strategy at a job interview!________________________________________________________________

To All Alias Modellers This is a Beautiful Sight

A perfect Draft/Slave/Stub surface which has G2 curve-cont. with a set of Blend and Edit curves built perpendicular to it with G1 tangency and who can resist turning all the CV’s on from time to time to admire their creation. To me it’s like the Blackpool illuminations being turned on in your own PC.[slickr-flickr tag=”craft knife 2″]Without getting to this stage where all the curves are set up to achieve their appropriate condition, there is no point in continuing with the model. If I can’t get :

  • G0  = position (no gaps)
  • G1 = Tangency
  • G2 = Curvature Continuity at the meeting of 2 curves Then I go back as far as I have to in the build process, scrapping curves and even the Draft surfs. if I can’t get them to align accurately, until I establish a sound foundation on which I can start building a good accurate model on once again. Fortunately this drastic action is not called for often as by a comination of chnging crv. geo. in the control Panel, carefully moving Cv’s with the Move CV tool and Panarizing recalcitrent crvs. it is normally possible to correct your curve set, so that you have the necessary G1 or G2 as you require.

Autodesk Alias Studio Tutorial – Good Curves Good Surfaces

    Slave  Surfaces

Also called: Surrogate Surfs. Draft Surfs. Etc.The success or failure of a model, depends on how accurately you build the first curves. This is something that I have to try very hard to get my students to come to really understand and many of their early models ended up with failure of the surfaces to achieve G0, G1 or curvature continuity.I have attached a student’s start to one of the best tutorials out there. The pic shows how Curve. Cont. has been achieved on the 0Y profile curve, prior to building Draft surfaces out from it in along the -Y axis.(This is the start of Anthony Eland’s “Retractable Knife” Tutorial, which you can follow at:http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/details/Retractable_Knife_134471/)Good curves here indicated by the shape of the combs. The red lines on the combs meet each other where G2 curvature is required. However there is a big nasty inflexion shown in the top surface.________________________________________________________________

Autodesk Alias Studio Tutorial – Creating High Quality Surface Set

Please donate just 5 Eur/6 USD. Why not take 2 min to do it now?
Learning Alias sponsors the Education of children in Nepal. This is Deepana and we need to raise money to put her through Nursing College in Kathmandu. Learning Alias Blog is a free service, but if you would like to show your appreciation, please make a small donation. 100% of your money will go directly to pay Deepana’s college fees. Without the help of sponsors in the developed world, Deepana would receive no education whatsoever, as she comes from a remote Hymalayan village.  Thank You, graham bullock.
PayPal or Credit Card. NB: US Credit Card accepted

Thanks to readers who have already donated to help Deepana. The current total we are aiming for, to Pay for her 3 year State Nursing course is 4,000€. Please donate something even if it’s just 5 Euros/6 USD. It all helps and is very much appreciated. Thank you, g.
I want to  build a high quality surface, namely a front wing/ fender with you, but as all surfaces on a car exterior have to relate in terms of position, tangency or curvature to their boundary surfaces, this means that to build a wing, we have first to build the front center section of the car, so I have spent a few hours doing just that. Here are a few pictures to show the development:

Front Centre Section created in preparation for the wing/ Fender modelling.

Arrow shows horrible cross section. Surface will have to be rebuilt

Arrow shows horrible cross section. Surface will have to be rebuilt

This is quite a good surface set, but I ‘ve had no time to light it better. At the moment my lighting is making a good surface set look like really poor! I’m going to have to find some time to properly light the scene.Surface set is good, but I need to learn how Alias lighting works quickly!

First Look At Surface of the hood top. Oh my God!

I have been trying to build this in between several other jobs and as you can see, I have a lot of problems here and the only thing to do is to delete the surfaces, improve the curves to obtain surface continuity where required and then build the surfaces again taking more care to match meeting surfaces. They should have the same construction at adjacent boundaries i.e. the same surface degree ( degree: 3 – 1, deg.5 – 1, .) and they should have matching surface isoparms, if I am forced to make the surface more pliable by adding 1 or 2 extra spans.Surface set all sorted and ready to renderCenter surface set looks good with Zebra Diagonstic shading appliedArrows show where surface defects are

Surface Quality with Diagnostic Shading Turned On.

Here I went back and broke the hood down into 3 more manageable surfaces. After I built them I re-invoked the Square surf. tool and going into Advanced setting, I used Explicit control to alter the degree of each square in both the U and V direction with the horizontal edges set to Curvature, until I reached an acceptable result. This is a simplified explanation of how to resolve the hood top surface construction geo.

    Corrected Front Ceter Section Surface

Sorry! Still had no spare time to sort out the lightingt, but the surfaces are now looking healthier, ready to start building the fender/wing, to the surfaces established here. I want to  start building the fender as soon as I have some time.———–A few days laterAll the hard work worthwhile. Surfaces I can be proud of.If you are< fllowing this project, you may want to go off an work on another unrelated tutorial, until I am ready to prgress this fender further. I find if my students have a break from an intense model and go off and do something which offers other challenges, they learn more quickly, so having say an automotive project on the go along with a small but complex product design project is an effricient way to learn Alias.  One learns new techniques and new tools and can then come back to the bigger project better equiped to deal with its challenges.Corrected Surface________________________________________________________________

In this project I set out to build a front wing, which was to become a tutorial for my students, but unless

I have the reference data vis a vis surrounding surfaces, I have to build the whole front centre section of the car to achieve either G0 (Possitional continuity 0.01 – 0.001 mm),Tangency or full Curvature Continuity when I come to build the wing/fender surfs. on.Just like a beautiful person has a beautiful bone structure underlying everything, a beautiful surface can only be created from perfect curves. It can take hours to establish good curve. I have shown some typical student’s set up curves, which are quite poor. The pink lines on the tops of the Curvature combs should meet where combs join each other. On this model they are miles off doing that. For an experienced modeller it doesn’t take long to correct all the curves. I do this on the student’s .wire and then email it back, so that he/she can see where the bar is set for acceptable curvature quality. “Bad Curves, Bad Model.” There cannot be another outcomeFrom this pic. you can seee that the student needs to learn how to get smoother curve combs and how to align boundry curves to get from GO (p0sition) to G1 (tangent) and where it is needed G2 (Curv.Cont.)I am now teaching what I learned from some very fine tutorials: How to build and then evaluate better curves using the Blend Curve Manipulator.I am stopping now to watch my lovely Dagenham girl. I think most X-Factor finalists have practically no individual qualities, but Stacey has a lovely texture and a unique sound to her voice, but probably most voters are women, so she’ll need “El mano de Dios” to win. Nevertheless I am sure she will earn enough from her fame and talent to give her and her family a better life. I hope so!________________________________________________________________

Autodesk Alias Studio Tutorial – Customized Wheel

Here’s a nice wheel customized by one of my students, Russell.

    Wheel-1b

“I am learning something every session, although it is really a lot faster and easier now that I have a teacher and my stress levels have returned to normal.”

This is a comment sent in by an 18 year old student who has just passed his Baccualauriat. He can’t afford to go to Uni, but has his heart set on becoming an Alias Studio Product Modeller. Russell studies at home. His parents pay me a fixed monthly fee and in return I coach him. He is good at maths, which is usually a good sign and he plans to start looking for a position as an improver as soon as he has a high enough level of Alias and accumalated a nice portfolio of  Autodesk Alias Studio models.”There are things in this model that aren’t right, but if I stopped to find out how to do everything, I would grind to a halt.I am pleased that I now understand basic rendering (How to set up the scene.) Because I have been wasting so much time with lights and cameras and not learning how to model.”
Wheel-1aMy less experienced students found the disc was a challenge.________________________________________________________________

To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry Entry level has been made easier.

For student’s who have the objective of finding a CAD job in the near future, I still teach One to One students and all of these students get Automotive Modeling or Design/Modeling jobs, so it’s a great investment to make. The hourly rate is very high and there are vacancies in UK. France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, USA, Brazil etc. I can only take a maximum of 5-7 students at any one time. I teach all levels right up to Post Graduates. I have never had a Private student fail to get an Alias Automotive job (Companies include Ferrari, GM, Lotus, Opel, Audi Seat etc. ). If you wish to apply for a place, please email me with all your details.
