Building a Sports Car in Autodesk Alias

The Inner Shoulder Line and Main Center Surfaces

It’s very important to build a very good quality curve for the inner shoulder, as this is perhaps the most important styling line after the YO lineAs you can see I have taken a lot of care to view this line from as many aspects as possible. If you can find any lumps or inflexions in it, you must sort them out before you continue, if you don’t sort it out at this stage, you are merely building massive defects into your main surfaces and your model WILL failOnce I got the shoulder line looking good, I mirrored it across the XZ and used the 2 curves to build a square surf. Next I increased the number of isoparms, as illustrated and then used the proportional Modification tool to pull the CV’s to produce a positive crowning in the surface.

Bulges on top of Wings

Here I projected 2 rectangles onto the hood top and built square surfs. onto the resulting C_O_S’s. I added extra CV rows to all 4 edges of the rectangular surfs. I needed 3 rows of CV’s close to each of the 4 surf. boundaries in order to maintain Positional alignment later when using the Prop.Mod tool to pull the CV’s. This is work in progress and the baby surfaces have not yet been blended into the parent surface

Aligning the Square Surfaces to the Parent Surface

Often when I build a Smaller surf. onto a parent surf. I don’t get Positional Continuity, so I delete the C_O_S ‘ s and create new C_O_S ‘ s using the Project Normal tool SET to 0.001mm. Once that’s done I use the Align tool to establish “P” at all boundaries. To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry entry level has been made easier. I’ve Built the Cockpit Surfaces Across the YO Axis

There’s a good reason to build the center surfaces of a vehicle across the YO, as trying to build only the LHS. and then >Duplicate>Mirror, nearly always leaves you with a surface continuity break

I have used the Zebra diagnostic shading in conjunction with internal Curvature Combs

On the isoparms and tweaked at the Cv’s on the roof, in order to get the best surface I can at this early stage.TIP: Use the Move CV tool set step size to 0.01 initially move several CV’s in the required area, NOT JUST ONE and to finish off your CV Pulling, set step size to 0.001 mm.

I Saved The Cockpit Out and then Filletted it Just for Presentation Purposes

The real model has no fillets, as these I leave off until the last possible moment. Once you have destroyed the surface intersections, you are very limited, if you want to replace a surface or you don’t like the size fillet that you have created. You could untrim an re fillet, but in Industry you work with out corner fillets until near the end of the build.[slickr-flickr tag=”cockpit”]To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry entry level has been made easier. Alias Studio Tutorial

Getting started with an automotive model in Alias. Canvas planes are much more helpful to work from than image planes

I’m Starting an Improved Model of  My  Sports  Car

This is the second model. The first was freehand with no drawing or visual aids, such as Canvas Planes and unless you have a lot of experience making either physical or virtual automotive models, I simply don’t recommend it. Life is MUCH easier if you start with input sketches, canvases or image planes. I don’t like image planes and prefer to use canvases, which can be viewed in the perspective view.

I have set my model up so that the center of the front wheel is set on the origin in the Left view

I have spent quite a few years making clay models

And a physical model usually has the center of the front wheel arch set on the XO , but this will vary from one company to another

I have set all my canvases so that they sit

as described with the center of the front wheel arch an 0Y and then moved the canvases away from the model along their respective world axes.
I can’t get excited about this part of the preparation, but now that it’s done, everything is ready for me to throw myself into building a really good model.
Pictured below is an Audi A5 Sportback built by one of my students who is now a Digital Sculptor for GM.

It’s 3:34 am. and a Good Time for Learning Autodesk-Alias

I’ve returned to this front-end slab surface I built a couple of months back as a project for my students. After they did a few tutorials on the surface Fillet Tool and Washing Out fillets, I felt ready to start giving them the go ahead to start boldly cutting into their basic slab surfs. We’ve also built an inner wheel arch..

Industry at Times is Brutal

When your modelling in an industrial Alias environment you will often be asked by the stylist to hack into large areas of your model and incorporate radical design changes. It’s very annoying and upsetting when it happens, but you should never show that. Always see that your mission is to create a product that will sll in the market place and if Engineering or Styling want to make a big change to your model, it is because it’s in the best interest of the project and all the mouths that it feeds

I’ve built a lot of fillets and what I’ve learned, is

That one has to think through how the fillets are going to join at corners and some times it’s better to build them short of a corner and then model a trasitional surface to join the two fillet sets at the corner

Lighting an Automotive Front End

This is a student’s first go at lighting a front end:”This is dfinitely not easy. My effort is only just about acceptable and I need to improve my lighting skills a lot. In this sceene I have a directional light with a spot (vertically downwards) 2 spots on the front surfs. a spot on the front corner and then a final spot pointing at the radial wheel arch. My spots range in intensity from 75,000 – 300,000. I set my directional light to 1.0 and when I use Ambient my normal setting is 0.4 – 1.0″

It’s no good thinking about lighting without thinking about shaders at the same time.

I’ve improved the lighting a little on this students file and left some work for him to do: I’ve used a car paint shader and then layered a Clear Coat shader over it. For the inner wheel arch I needed a seperate shader with the reflectivity turned off and without the layering of the Clear Coat. There are loads of areas that could be improved both in the modelling and in the lighting, but here it is. Oohps! Looks like I’ve got a flat tyre. I have set the ground plane a little higher to give the effect of compression in the tyre, but I’ve over done it!Sheet metal features added to front end section

I have Shown a Screenshot of a Rough Model that I will Now Build an Accurate Model From.

Autodesk Alias Studio Tutorial – Tennis Racket – 2 – Alias Course

Student’s experience of trying to model the tennis racket:

Posted September 22, 2009, 9:35 am by Martin Tyminski

“Hi Graham, It’s 3 am and I’m too tired to write much, but here’s some nice pics. of stringing a tennis racket

—- in Autodesk Alias. It went a bit wrong on me, but I’m happy for a first attempt. I used the tubular surfacing tool for the strings.

Note that I have one yellow string too many

(top) and the string leaders on their way to thread through the eyes in the frame are intersecting the top string. Note to myself.”Next model. Get string layout 100% correct before starting to build the strings.”[slickr-flickr tag=”stringing”]

——Several Days later

A Real Tester

“This is not an easy model to make successfully. It is rated by a the author who is a top design consultant as, Medium Difficulty. The difficult parts of this model are

  • Blending the tubular frame with the forked tubes of the yoke
  • Creating the transitional surfaces inboard of where the above components meet (The blend Transitional Surfaces)
  • Creating the yoke (betyween the grip and the forked tubes)
  • Configuring the geometry for the strings

I have no interest in tennis rackets

and I wanted to abandon the project midway through, but I took a break and came Back to it and once I got involved in the mind stretching aspects of building the strings, I was hooked and loved it.”________________________________________________________________________

So as you can see learning Alias is REALLY tough at times and only students who are REALLY COMMITED will succeed in becoming Autodesk Alias pro’s.

The tutorial which is authored by Martin Tyminsky

is impeccably presented using 66 screenshots. At times the step by step instructions have gaps in them. Like most tutorials it’s impossible for the author to describe every single step and it is by overcoming the gaps and really having to work certain things out for yourself, that you really start to learn and start to become a Modeller and not simply a good copier.

Where to Find This Great Tutorial

http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/

I personally also encountered some problems some of which I overcame

but the area I would improve upon should I build this model again would be the layout of the strings. I have too many strings and Instead of offsetting the vertical string by half a gap from the vertical center line, I have placed a string on the Y0. But it still looks Brilliant and I am really happy with the model.

Thanks to Martin Tyminski, we have ALL moved on a lot.

IMHO. the most difficult parts of this model are

  • Blending the forked shaft with the main frame
  • modelling the stringing

Today I have several imgs. for you.

The first shows a student’s first try at making the transitional blend surface, room for improvement.

The others shows her much improved solutions, which I hope look a lot sweeter.

The tutorial is well laid out, beautifully illustrated and a real challenge to complete.

Alias CAD Parting Lines that Maintain 0.5mm Width in All Views

I needed to build some accurate parting lines for a student. Here’s What My first Try  Looks Like

I have built parting lines on model mobile phones and remotes, down to 1mm, but somehow building good shutlines on a car body seems a lot harder to achieve. Two obvious reasons for this are

  • Surface curvature is very complex and finding the correct “geometry view” is often pretty tough
  • There are often a multitude of small surfaces to project onto and trim, especially around areas like radial wheel arches

Alias Automotive correct partinline technique. Widths spec. varies with each peoject. Widths can be from 3mm to 12mm on a Defender or similarFillet Flange tool on both sides and then skin the bottom to seal off the model's volume

  • Select only the surfs. that you really need to have in view and then >Hide Unselected all other surfs. so that your view is as simple as it can possibly be
  • Don’t make the p-lines any deeper than is asolutely necessary

This makes the tedious job of building parting lines easier

Here’s how my students first Try at Building a Helmet with 5 Surfaces Came Out

No Tweaking CV’s, Rebuilding Surfaces, Just the Raw First Model

[slickr-flickr tag=”my helmet”]

This is a tutorial from the Autodesk Alias Learning website Posted August 13, 2009, 1:20 am by Fridolin Beisert

http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/This model is based on a primitive (sphere) which has been transformed and trimmed berfore having transisional surfs built on to its curves on surface.

There is a fair bit of  “Proportional Modification Control” used for

  • creating the peak from a square built onto the surface of the sphere. The sphere’s surfaces were dodgy after transforming and he should have perfected them before continuing.
  • pulling down the rim to form the neck guard
  • pulling out the rolled edge on the visor

“Whilst I did learn a lot, I also struggled with certain aspects of this model”

  • Getting a really true surf. once he had transformed the orig. sphere
  • Getting the peak to look as though it is a continuous surface with the sphere (even though the Curvature Locators showed “C” on the long edge of the peak’s surf. boundary, in the rendering the surface join is obvious)
  • Lighting. It took him 2 hrs. to get the scene even reasonably lit for rendering

Well although he is pleased with the first attempt, I can see lots of areas where he needs to improve his modelling and we will be working to improve those, so that he ends up with a product model that he can feel proud of, before moving onto a more challenging tutorial

This post is dedicated to Satoshi Wada

Senior Exterior Designer, Audi.AG

You can find this in video format on the Autodek Alias Design Community website: http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/details/Video_Washout_136031/

The Main Part of the Wing/Fender Finished

Have you eaver had that feeling that you are actually getting somewhere after a long period of slaving away?

It’s been really hard for students following this fender construction, but the result although still only at 60% perfect, I am really pleased with. The body-side feature washes out imperceivably in this example, into the radial wheel arch and I love looking at it. It’s pure sculpture to me.

I worked with Satoshi Wada at Audi in 1999

modelling his new Audi A6. I was a Clay Modeller then and Satoshi was the Designer. He is now Senior Exterior Designer. Apart from designing vehicles he is a very good sculptor and it was through him that I gained the realization that a well styled automobile is actually a piece of Dynamic Sculpture.

It was Satoshi Wada who introduced me to Alias. If you don’t find this an object of great beauty, then perhaps Alias is not for you!Here-s an email comment I got from a student engaged in modelling this component:”It’s really hard, but I am undestanding Alias a little more each day. Although I still have days when I want to descend from the 27th floor without the aid of the lift!”Well to be honest we all feel like that when we get stuck on an aspect of a model. The trick is to take a break, talk to another modeller an come back with a fresh view. Sometimes I take a break from a difficult surf. blending problem and think up a new strategy, on returning I’ll delete thye whole area and build a new patch layout. Everybody has to ask for help sometimes! The surface reflects light in a beautiful way. I have used the (2010) Surface/Fillet-Flange tool to create the door opening fillet flange, although I haven’t reworked the detail where the fillet flange runs past the body side feat._____________________________________________About the author:I achieved success because I was totally committed and because I had people who were prepared to help me. I believe in giving back and I do so to people who can demonstrate their total commitment to becoming competent Alias Studio modellers.________________________________________________________________

To Learn Alias Automotive to Industry Entry level has been made easier.

For student’s who have the objective of finding a CAD job in the near future, I still teach One to One students and all of these students get Automotive Modeling or Design/Modeling jobs, so it’s a great investment to make. The hourly rate is very high and there are vacancies in UK. France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, USA, Brazil etc. I can only take a maximum of 5-7 students at any one time. I teach all levels right up to Post Graduates. I have never had a Private student fail to get an Alias Automotive job (Companies include Ferrari, GM, Lotus, Opel, Audi Seat etc. ). If you wish to apply for a place, please email me with all your details.

Feature Washes Out

Fender Washout Tutorial

You can find this in video format on the Autodek Alias Design Community website: http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/details/Video_Washout_136031/It has been really tough for most of my students having to raise their game to work to the standards of  Roberto Tomarchio but I am pleased with the resulting surfaces that they have presented and would award them 6 – 8 out of 10, as I know that there are areas where the surface continuity simply isn’t up to production/industry standards, but that’s fine. I encourage my students to make their first model to the best of their ability not worrying or stopping when they can’t get something to work out 100%. I tell them to keep going and to FINISH the model. Students who drop half finished projects never make it in the very challenging Alias world. They learn a lot from the first finished model and after a critique from me the second attempt is very often MUCH better snd very importantly, they feel good about the experiece, simply because they feel that they have become better modellers.

Practice is your Greatest Friend

We all have been through highs as well as whopping great lows, struggling to understand a tutorial of this level, but you learn a lot and can then use the Align tool to much better effect and I understand how to get good Positioning as well as Curvature Cont. at adjacent surface boundaries even if you can’t always do it. You should spend every spare minute you get practicing Alias. It’s the only way to make it.

Pulling Power

Student Comment:”Since I have been doing top level tutorials I have become more competent at pulling CV’s to greater improve my surfaces.”________________________________________________________________
