Autodesk Alias – Rear Number Plate Depression

How to Approach Building a Number plate Depression

A lot of students get stuck trying to work out how to go about modelling the rear number plate depression, so I’m going to show you how I go about this

fig.1

1

Create this surface (A),

but don’t think about the depression initially, just concentrate on building a really nice surf

I built this surf across the XZ plane as an Apexless surf and then trimmed it on the XZ intersection

fig. 2

2

Rear View: Project to establish these COS.

We are going to trim the outer flange of the number plate depression from the rear panel . As this car has a hatch back it has a parting line “B”, which is a convenient place to divide the panel we want to detail from the rear end. If you don’t have a parting line on your model, then you only need to create the inner COS. You can trim divide the enclosed surface, as I have shown in fig. 4.

fig. 3

3

Before I trimmed the number plate area out,

I created  the Bumper to Rear Panel blend “A”

Thhis trim edge is where  I will build the depression surfs. from “B”

Surf. “C” is a simple Drafty Surf.

fig.  4

4

You will end up with the surrounding flange

and then you will need to create a surface for the actual number plate to sit on

Once you have the numberplate mounting surf. built and located

Start running deg. 3 , 1. curvs. from the number plate surf to the flange and then build Square or BiRail surfs to form the sides of the depression

Use the Surface Fillet Control to soften the corners.

fig. 4A
7

This is from an Audi andthe depression is rather complicated requiring extra surfs.

Most times I only need to create 5 surfs plus blends

fig.  5

fig.  6

I hope that I have shown how, what appears to be a complicated task can be made easier by isolating the area you need to develop within your model.

Alias Tutorial – Surface Fillets – Variable Radius

100% of donations go to provide food shelter and education for the abandoned Street Children of Nepal. Please give a few USD/Euro back. Why not do it right now by C.C. or Paypal? Charity credetials: BUDDHA MEMORIAL CHILDREN’S HOME TRUST. Registered Charity No: 1115373 . Thank you, graham bullock

Variable  Radius  Fillets

There are many occasions when the Designer will require you to build variable radius fillets

This detail is a Halogen lamp housing which is blended into a complex curved surf, that moulds around the

corner of the yacht. The Stylist requires it to have a large blend of 100.0 on the outside, but a much smaller 20.0 mm blend on the inside

2

Start by making a complex curved back plate

Front: make 2 crvs that represent the outer wall and 2 circles that represent the wall of the lamp

Now project them onto the back plate and hide the original curves

3

Draft /Flange Surf Option

Select all the COS , then set depth and pull direction. I am pulling on the Y axis

4

Once you have created the draft surfs.

put a skin surf across them to close them off and then

using the Round tool, select all the edges and fillet them all in one go

5

6

You should have a basic back plate assy that looks like this (above)

7

Trim away the flash

and put the outer wall on a new layer. Make it inactive

8

Set the Surface Fillet Control as shown above

(I have used a default tangent offset value of 20 but you may probably need the std.default setting which is 10.0000)

  1. select the back plate it will turn pink, then hit accept
  2. select the outer wall it will turn yellow then hit accept
  3. now you will see a yellow and a pink arrow. these indicated which side of your target surfs the fillet will build, if they are not pointing the right way, just click on the incorrect arrow to flip its direction
  4. now hit “build”

9

now you will see that a uniform radius fillet has built

  1. click on the right hand side of the  blue indicator line
  2. a radius indicator will appear. In the prompt line, type in a high value , mine was 100. you may onlyneed say 25 to 50
  3. click on the leftt hand side of the  blue indicator line
  4. a radius indicator will appear. In the prompt line, type in a low value , mine was 20. you may need less
  5. hit Recalculate and the final variable fillet will build

12

Curvature Evaluation

set to “mean” and value 10.0 we can see the superb quality of surfaces available from the Surf Fillet Control

13

Zebra Stripe Diagnostic

tessellator turned up full, plot set wide and Shader Anti-Alias set to medium, everything looks fine

10

the Stylist is right again the variable radius fillet looks beautiful

Dynamic Modeling  with the Conform Rig Tool

A very talented student of mine modelled this Harley tank and I wanted to show him ways of developing his model by adding a rubber knee pad and a filler capa lot of the time I model these things in situe. I start by projecting crvs to get a COS and then I model say the knee pad. The problem with this approach is that it’s not flexible and when the designer requests a change , it may call for a lot of re-modelling.

The Conform Rig Tool is the answer in a lot of cases, as it allows you to move and scale your geo, whilst the new geo. continually adopts the shape of the immediate surface on which it has been placedAbove you can see where I have created the new geo. at the origin in the Top view and then transplanted it to conform to the tank’s side surfs.

This tool has many uses as it allows you to rapidly change the geo of either a selected area  or of your entire model. It also allows you to transform say a flat piece of geo, say a badge  to conform to the surface shape of your model and as you move the new geo over your model it will constantly up date to the new surf. conditions. It’s pretty mind blowing!!!!!!!!!!!

CuurvatureEvaluation-1

This is a Completed Class A model

I am going to show you here, how to further improve any large surface by Pulling CVsDiagnostic Shader “Curvature Eval.”This is a student’s work and the surface is really good, so to find a fault to demonstrate with, I have had to  turn the sensitivity of the tool way up high. Set the tool to Gaussian and 7.5This shows up the light green spot (see arrow) the flatness here is really minimal and could be left, but let’s fix it! Turn on the CV hull and using Move CV, Type XYZ with X ad Y axes constrained and “step size” = 0.005mm,pull the CVs over the flat area until the color matches that of the surrounding surface

CuurvatureEvaluation-1-a

A nice flow of even harmonic colorI can tell by looking at the color map, that this srface is now perfect

CuurvatureEvaluation-2

I needed to pull tangent row CVs on the adjacent surf to retain the colinnea relationship of the tangent CV rows on eithr side of the surf. boundary

CuurvatureEvaluation-3

Another Class A surf

to further improve. the arrow points to a tight bend in and narrowing of the Zebra, which tells me that there is a tiny peak running across the roof in YI prefer to set the Zebra repeat value to 0.35 to best see this type of deviation

CuurvatureEvaluation-5

With Curvature Eval on

the defect is very easy to see. When I hand modelled the defect out, I lost curvature at the boundary, so once again I needed to pull thr G1 CVs on both sides of the boundary to regain G2. I could also have added 2 extra rows of CVs near to where the arrow is pointing (Insert Tool) and that woul have protected the curvature cond. at the boundary

CuurvatureEvaluation-4

The Finished Job

The width of the Zebra plot is constant, indicative of a perfect Class A Surface. The surface deg. is: 5,1. 5,1.

Enjoy

The object of this piece of modelling, is to blend 2 fillets into 1 whilst running around a 90% bend. Pretty simple then!

To model this to my personal construction settings, would not be fantastically difficult, but for this article I modelled it to Catia V5 and found that It tooik a fair bit of thinking through.

Class “A” Surfacing the BMW Z4 Style Hood Top

Class-A-Surfacing

This comb is demonstrating that we have curvature not only at the surf boundaries, but it is consistent throughout the surface if you have curves like this your surfaces will have great highlights and your designer will like you

10

A class A surfacer with a lot of experience who reads this site, kindly wrote in and suggested an even more elegant strategy for building this tricky hood top, so I built it. It takes a bit of bottle to take on big surfs that are doing a lot of work, but , you will get better highlights, if you can control them. Also with the right amount of experience it’s a quicker way to model.

11

I went in here with the surf fillet tool.  It looks jagged because I haven’t trimmed beneath the fillet. You could build a good surf set like this, but I decided to show you the trickier washed out Free form Fillet approach

12

So here it is there are 2 bi-rails and then 3 fillets for each ridge feature. As Stylists are forever changing the size and shape of fillets above the waist line, this method makes it easy to effect styling updates

13

Looks like a piece of modern art. I think it’s beautiful

14

It’s time to hit the coffee machine, so I ‘ve assigned a paint shader with clear coat and left it displaying on my monitor. Taking a first look at the surf set with particular attention to the front lip. All surfs must behave themselves by the time they wash out at the front and back edges

15

If your curves don’t throw up a comb like this, then you don’t have curvature continuity G3. It’s no good settling for jagged curv combs, because your model will fail further along the line. If it ain’t right, fix it before you compound the problem

16

OK so all trimmed out with Fillet Flange applied and healthy looking highlights

Learning Alias sponsors the Education of children in Nepal. But right
now we need to raise money quickly to send to her village Khiji Chandeshwori, which is in the foot
hills of Mount Everest. 7 homes in this small village 2 days walk from the nearest road, have need
completely destroyed and the families are sleeping under plastic in the rain and cold. However much
is collected up to 1000 GBP ,LearningAlias will double. Thank You for your kindness, graham

Class “A” Surfacing the BMW Z4 Hood Top

1

A perfect Class A Curvature Comb, Depicting G3 Curvature Cont.

You must keep going with your Move_Cv until you have perfect Combs. Anything less than perfect, is no good for Class A modelling purposes

2

BMW couldn’t have made this hood more complicated if they tried,

but nevertheless Alias Class A modellers, must be able to model ANY shape with incredible accuracyI have started by positioning 2 construction points in 3 views. I probably spent 15 min placing these 2 points, as the entire work flow is based on starting accurate ly.You may have noticed that there is a blue box around my model. This is in fact a cube scaled to fit the ground plane, top of roof and edge of wing mirrors. This ensures that all canvas planes are aligned exactly.Notice how smooth the crv is. You must spend as long as it takes getting your curves perfect, as your model is based on your crvs.

3

The other thing that students don’t seem to learn at uni. is efficient Patch_layout.

It takes years to know all the tricks.Don’t try to do too much with a Square surf. Many learners make massive sq surfs. and they have no control of the topology, so end up with horrid bulging edges etc.

4

We are looking down on 16 surfs here the minimum that would accurately follow the design lines.

For Class A work I tend to use mostly sq. surfs as they are the most sophisticated and controllable

6

Patch Layout

Everybody learning wants to find out how to work out patch layouts. If you think out where you are going to have your patches, then modelling suddenly becomes a little simpler

7

The lighting shows the complexity of the task

8

Class A Requires that there are no gaps i.e. the model is completely closed and whilst Go,G1, are still needed within the model. Please note I use 6 parent surfaces with 2 smaller surfaces at the front of the hood + the blends, but it is possible to model this hood with 3 parent srfs.

Surface curvature continuity is required to be min G2 and mostly G3Class A models are made to tight tolerances, this model is Catia V5

9

The finished item

and I have highlighted the 2 construction points that define the location of the surface set on the model. Get them wrong and the model is heading for the digital dust (trash) bin.

Autodesk Alias Studio Tutorial – Rear Apron

Learning Alias sponsors the Education of children in Nepal. This is Deepana and we need to raise money to put her through Nursing College in Kathmandu. Learning Alias Blog is a free service, but if you would like to show your appreciation, please make a small donation. 100% of your money will go directly to pay Deepana’s college fees. Please donate just 5 Eur/6 USD. Why not take 2 min to do it now? Thank You, graham bullock.

I would like to thank all my readers who have made many small but important donations to help Deepana. The current total we are aiming for to Pay for her 3 year State Nursing course is 4,000€. Please donate something even if it’s just 5 Euros/6 USD. It all helps. Thank you, g.

NURBS  Modelling Audi A5 Rear Apron

1

Make sure that you have perfect curve combs in the Top view.

Here my students lower crv is perfect whilst the top crv has an inflection.

2

Wobble in the highlight

3

Built with the Square tool

4

She later detached the surface

5

Just deg. 3

Amazingly a 3 deg sq. surf has the flexibility to build around the sweeping curve of the apron. You can see that she needed 8 spans to get G1

6

Zebra Stripes

Remember to check every surface with the Zebra tool. Here we can see that the surface is smooth internally, but the highlights a meandering. This only partial due to the inflexion. Probably an extra crv at the corner would have helped, but this would have been  much harder to model

7

This surface is fine

at the Styling stage, as it’s underneath the vehicle, but for major surfs, such a highlight problem would have to be corrected

8

Finished job Impressive

Her detailing made the finished model look really impressive.

So to sum up

  • Perfect crvs to start with
  • Try to make sure that the 2 end crvs have a similar character
  • You can build it with just 1 deg 3,3,8,1 square surf
  • Consider using this as a transitional surf and then detaching it to create several smaller single span surfs. (for a lighter model)
  • Evaluate your surfs with the Zebra

Cheers,

graham
